Demand Jail Time for Heat Death of 17-Year-Old Maria Isabel  → change.org

stfuconservatives:

eddyizm:

Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez was 17 years old. She was engaged and pregnant. Now she’s dead, and the people responsible are about to walk away without a minute of jail time. Maria Isabel was a farmworker employed by Merced Farm Labor –– a company that was fined in 2006 for not having a written heat-stress prevention plan to protect its workers. They never did write that plan. On May 14th, 2010, Maria Isabel worked in a vineyard for nine hours straight. She was denied shade. She was denied water. She was denied rest. And when she finally collapsed in her fiance’s arms and was rushed to the hospital, her co-workers were instructed to lie to the doctors, to say that she had fainted while exercising. Maria Isabel died later that night. Her fever was 108 degrees. Now the San Joaquin District Attorney wants to let the people responsible for Maria Isabel’s death go with nothing more than community service. Click here to stand against this injustice. Merced Farm Labor is owned by Maria De Los Angeles Colunga, and its safety coordinator is Elias Armenta. Both Colunga and Armenta have been charged with involuntary manslaughter, but now San Joaquin District Attorney James Willett has offered them a plea deal where Colunga will most likely face 40 hours community service and a small fine and Armenta 400 hours. “Everyone needs to move along with their lives. My clients are very, very nice people and very remorseful,” said Merced’s attorney. But Colunga and Armenta didn’t display remorse for Maria Isabel’s death. In fact, the California Department of Labor had to shut the company down in July of 2010, because they still refused to provide their workers with the shade and water breaks required by California law, even after those same practices killed Maria Isabel. Maria Isabel’s family wants justice for her death, and they are working with the United Farmworkers Union to try to get it. We can help, but the sentencing hearing for Colunga and Armenta is scheduled for March 9th – and time is running out.

This happened HERE, in America. A young pregnant woman died because she was denied water, shade or rest while working outdoors. Just despicable.

“A democratic morality should judge sexual acts by the way partners treat one another, the level of mutual consideration, the presence or absence of coercion, and the quantity and quality of the pleasures they provide. Whether sex acts are gay or straight, coupled or in groups, naked or in underwear, commercial or free, with or without video, should not be ethical concerns.” —Gayle Rubin, “Thinking Sex: Notes for a Radical Theory of the Politics of Sexuality” (via rev)

BREAKING: Wisconsin Police Have Joined Protest Inside State Capitol → understory.ran.org

drinkthe-koolaid:

kateoplis:

From inside the Wisconsin State Capitol, RAN ally Ryan Harvey:

“Hundreds of cops have just marched into the Wisconsin state capitol building to protest the anti-Union bill, to massive applause. They now join up to 600 people who are inside.”

From his Facebook page earlier today:

“Police have just announced to the crowds inside the occupied State Capitol of Wisconsin: ‘We have been ordered by the legislature to kick you all out at 4:00 today. But we know what’s right from wrong. We will not be kicking anyone out, in fact, we will be sleeping here with you!’ Unreal.”

They threatened this yesterday. Glad to see they followed through. Solidarity!

As it turns out, [Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh] belong to the American Federation Television and Radio Artists union (AFTRA), which is the AFL-CIO affiliate for television and broadcast workers.

Yes, you read that right. While Hannity, O’Reilly and Limbaugh have been railing against union workers in Wisconsin, all three of them belong to an AFL-CIO affiliate union.

Pro-choice song!

cherrispryteaintsobrite:

walkforchoice:

Feel free to sing along! (Cee-lo Green’s ‘Forget You’)

Chorus:
See you tryin’ to take the rights
From the sisters I love
And I’m like, forget you
I guess the rape redefinition
Wasn’t enough
And I’m like, forget you
And your dumb laws too
Said if I was richer
I could bribe ‘ya
Huh! Ain’t that some shhhh!
And now there’s pain in my womb
From this impending doom
I’m like, forget you

Verse 1:
I’m sorry
I was born with ovaries
But that don’t mean
I can’t make a choice
Guess they’re all rich men
And we’re all paltry
Gotta let ‘em know
We have a voice

I pity the fool
Who wants to vote for you
(You’re a gold digger)
Well
(Just thought you should know)
Ooooohooooo
I got some news for you
We’re not gonna take this BS no more

Chorus

Verse 2:
I know
You had to borrow
From China for the economy
While spending trillions
On the wars
Killing other people’s babies.

I pity the fool
Who wants to vote for you
(You’re a gold digger)
Well…
(Just thought you should know)
Oooohooooo
I got some news for you
Oohhh I really hate your ass right now

Chorus

Bridge:
Now crazy, crazy, rich men
Why you wanna wanna hurt us so bad?
(So bad, so bad, so bad)
Don’t force us to be mamas
Cuz you never force the boys
To be dads
(the dads, the dads, the dads)

And I was like,
Uh! Why? Uh! Why? Uh Why??? Rich man
I hate you! I still hate you! Ohhhhh

Chorus.

OMG AWESOME.

Thanks Wisconsin Republicans!

stfuconservatives:

You gave this liberal a wonderful idea, we’re going to keep the federal senate and house up until 1am and make them listen to 60 liberals talk about the budget and then once they start to nod off.

Boom! Democrats vote in nationwide gay marriage! Before they realize what happened BOOM! Higher taxes for the top 1%! Inalienable right to abortions! Comprehensive Immigration Reform! Churches that donate to political campaigns have to pay taxes! Increased funding for Planned Parenthood and PBS/NPR!

And every Conservative that doesn’t disagree in the next minute (that’s 2:02am PST) by default agrees with everything I just proposed. Because who needs debate and discussion when you can just turn politics into a “who can stay up later” contest.

AP: "Republicans in the Wisconsin Assembly took the first significant action on their plan to strip collective bargaining rights from most public workers, abruptly passing the measure early Friday morning before sleep-deprived Democrats realized what was happening." → nytimes.com

stfuconservatives:

I can hardly fucking believe the sliminess of this:

Democrats launched a filibuster, throwing out dozens of amendments and delivering rambling speeches. Each time Republicans tried to speed up the proceedings, Democrats rose from their seats and wailed that the GOP was stifling them.

Debate had gone on for 60 hours and 15 Democrats were still waiting to speak when the vote started around 1 a.m. Friday. Speaker Pro Tem Bill Kramer, R-Waukesha, opened the roll and closed it within seconds.

Democrats looked around, bewildered. Only 13 of the 38 Democratic members managed to vote in time.

This shit goes beyond party lines, this goes beyond pro-union anti-union, this is not democracy. How dare they open and close the rolls before Democrats even have a chance to vote.

“Hey do you want to strip unions of their right to collectively bargain?”

“Well actually n-.”

“Too late! The vote is closed.”

I’m shaking with fury right now…

-Joe

So am I. Fucking Republicans. Fucking Tea Party. You accuse me of being the “unpatriotic” American. Fuck you. You have gone against everything this country is supposed to be about. You don’t believe in the principles of this country. You don’t deserve to shroud yourselves in the American Flag. You don’t deserve to call yourselves anything other than soulless, greedy, and uncaring bastards.

Not to mention you did nothing in all of this but prove how underhanded and evil you are. While I refuse to judge all “Republicans” by your actions, I judge you, the Republican members of the Wisconsin State Assembly, as cowardly degenerates who don’t have the gumption to stand up for your beliefs in honest and straight-forward ways, and all I can do is promise to join with the rest of those fighting you and your power grab.

If, as you like to believe, you are the natural philosophical descendants of our Founding Fathers though, maybe I no longer want to be an American. Because your idea of what makes a country great only makes you and your buddies great; you have proven greed is great, and humanity means nothing, let alone your fellow country men.

Sad thing is, this doesn’t surprise me. In the least.
