too bad teachers unions fuck everything up
Yeah, so not the problem with the state of education these days. And tell that to the teachers in Pennsylvania who chose to work for nothing to make sure their students continued to be educated despite what the governor of that state is doing to them.
It’s too bad too many people claim to believe that children come first, but only if they don’t have to pay for them themselves.
In other words, don’t make statements that have little merit and only barely scrape the surface of what’s really wrong with the education system of this country.
Ah man I really wanted to get in a deeper conversation about this through asks but I’ll reblog instead I guess. Yes, I understand that what I say is not agreeable and I can tell you why, specifically, I don’t support teachers unions. Also, fair warning, I’m not going to delve in a long explanation of things, because that would be a waste of time. So please, pardon my basic saying of things. I do support unions in general, one’s that do not involve a direct service to the people. Teachers provide. They give us the benefit of knowledge and educated growth. But when people start to argue about money, and not the people that need to be taught, I have a problem. Teaching should come with a lot of pay and extra benefits without the help of a union, because they way it has been presented to me in the past, unions are more about the money than the children. Yes, money is great, the best teachers who work hard and provide knowledge for their students deserve it. Now I could tell you the story of a gym teacher, rock climbing actually, who puts countless hours of effort in a plan for his class. Not to mention that when he’s called in for subbing he makes plans for those too. Unlike some of the regular gym teachers, this guy did not just throw a ball into the room each time and nothing else. This guy cared about the kids he was teaching. Teachers that care, teachers that work hard, yes they deserve the upmost respect and bountiful pay. The problem with unions is that, even if you are a hard working, caring teacher, you can and will get paid as much as some asshole that doesn’t care. That’s my problem. If a teacher is good they should stay, if not, if they don’t care, they need to go and stop fighting. There are a ton of problems with the education system, that is true, and we need to address them in ways that make sense. That is my opinion, if you have sources or articles that state differently or have different facts than what my opinion is based on, do send them to me because being more well read would benefit us both.
Fabulous. I had (finally) replied, and tumblr freaking lost the post. So maybe I’ll try and be more succinct.
Basically, yes, I agree. There are definitely examples of where teachers’ unions have failed the children that their members are supposed to be teaching. Yes, there are definitely teachers who shouldn’t be teachers, much like there are cops that shouldn’t be cops, parents who shouldn’t be parents, and presidents who shouldn’t be presidents.
My main complaint was that you seem to be putting the sole onus of the failing state of education in this country on the teachers’ union. That is so completely short-sighted in my opinion, and misses the point entirely. Teachers’ unions are, unfortunately perhaps, necessary. Because while children need educations, those teachers also need to be able to make a living doing what they have chosen to do. And unfortunately, the priorities in this country are so completely backward that they can’t.
Basically, you can’t blame a whole group of unions because there are a few teachers out there teaching who shouldn’t be. Because the thing is, “bad teachers” are more anecdotal than anything. I’ve had a few dozen teachers in my life, either as my instructors or as friends. And with exactly ONE exception, I’ve known not a single one who wasn’t doing the best job they could with what they were given. And the thing is, they are given very little.
Yes, teachers’ unions perhaps do overlook the betterment of their students in favor of themselves. But it’s rarely because they want to get rich, but because they want to be able to do their jobs. Problem is, in this country, they can’t. People love to claim they believe that the “children are our future” (thank you Michael Masser and Linda Creed), but education is not a priority in this country. If it were, we wouldn’t be having this discussion about teachers who shouldn’t be teachers, because we’d have the money to not only weed out the bad ones but woo in the good ones who have chosen to use their skills in other, more profitable fields.
It comes down to this; teachers are what EDUCATE our students, and if we continue to downgrade their lives, denigrate their work, and deny them what they deserve, students will never come first. And I’m sorry, but I do not see how teachers’ unions carry the responsibility with this. At least not in anyway the bulk of the responsibility, which is what I inferred from your comment.
Sorry this took so long, I meant to reply and kept forgetting. And it might be a bit biting, but I’m in a bad mood, and this is something I feel extremely passionate about. I (at least I did up until recently, and hopefully will again) want to be a teacher. I have since I was a kid. I don’t have any intention of living well off of it, but I want to do it because I believe in it and and I KNOW I’ll be good at it. But the attitudes of too many towards teachers constantly have me rethinking my goal (well, that and a whole PILE of other shit), because I’m not sure I want to be lumped in with a group who so many seem to dislike and yet expect to bend over backwards in aid to their children.
